BEING OVERWEIGHT CAN LEAD TO HYPERTENSION

High blood pressure, which is generally anything higher than 135/85 mm (millimeters of mercury pressure) for those under the age of 65, is known as hypertension. A normal blood pressure reading is commonly defined as 120/80 mm but there are various factors to consider. The higher the numbers, the harder the heart and blood vessels work to pump blood through the body thereby increasing the risk of health problems.

Someone with Hypertension can go years without noticing any symptoms. That's why it is important to have your blood pressure checked at least once a year. Severe hypertension can cause dizziness, chest pain and headaches. If your doctor notes that your blood pressure is high on an annual visit, he/she will most likely have you come in again soon after to re-check it. If your blood pressure is high on three different visits, you most likely have hypertension.

Treatment for hypertension depends on how high your blood pressure is. Extremely high blood pressure can be deadly. Hypertension itself won't kill you but the complications that arise from it can. There are many factors associated with high blood pressure including heredity, sex and age. However, it is often linked to lifestyle choices such as smoking, high salt intake and especially obesity. The first steps most doctors will take in treating this problem is to encourage the patient to make serious lifestyle changes. Losing excess weight is one of the most common suggestions. Exercising regularly and getting into shape can be a lifesaver. Change in diet is also essential. It's important to consume a diet with the appropriate amount of protein, carbohydrates and fats for your body type and avoid foods that can lead to high blood pressure, particularly anything with a lot of sodium. Being overweight can cause serious health problems. Taking the time to get educated about healthy eating habits and physical fitness can save your life.
